Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these treatments must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
